I’ve been going down a rabbit hole and I’m hoping some of the FORScan/CAN/electronics people here can tell me how far-fetched this actually is.
My 2024 Bronco Raptor already has four exterior cameras: front, rear and both mirrors. What I want is not to keep the camera display up on SYNC while driving. I want the cameras quietly recording in the background while SYNC continues doing its normal CarPlay/maps/music thing.
The idea is pretty simple:
Keep all four cameras active → tap their video feeds → record them to a separate DVR/SSD.
From what I’ve found so far, the camera feeds converge at the IPMB. I’m thinking OBD-II/CAN might be useful for keeping the cameras active, while the actual video would have to be captured closer to the IPMB.
I’ve also found the earlier thread here about splitting the factory camera feed, which helped point me in this direction.
So here’s what I’d really like to know from the people who understand this architecture better than I do:
Where would you tap the video, and how would you keep all four cameras active without interfering with the factory system?
If you want the longer version of how I ended up this far down the rabbit hole, I wrote up everything I’ve found so far here:
Your Car Has Cameras Everywhere. How Can We Record Them?
I have a notional diagram posted on Cars & Other Bad Decisions:

Modern vehicles can see almost everything around them. Why am I still hanging another camera from the mirror of a Bronco?
